Al Asmakh Mall

Renovation / Refurbishment

Al Asmakh Mall relaunched with new design and more offerings

Al Asmakh Mall has been relaunched with a new design and more offerings. Located in Al Sadd, Doha, Al Asmakh Mall is a neighbourhood shopping destination for more than half a million families in Qatar, a statement said Wednesday. Al Asmakh Mall is very well connected through Salwa and Al Shamal Road. The nearest Metro Station is Al Joan, only 300m away. The complete revamp lends an iconic feel to the overall architecture and interior of the mall. The interiors areas are inspired by the desert oasis concept. The ceiling pattern is derived from desert wind causing the sand pattern seen in the floor design and colour used. The perforated panel design pattern seen on the columns is derived from the local Mashrabiya pattern. The selection of an earthy colour pallet makes the exterior and the interior of the mall look integrated. Speaking about the change, Shumalan Naicker, territory head, Landmark group, said: “It’s an absolute delight seeing this mall transform from its previous structure to the beautiful contemporary look. It’s one of the most preferred shopping destination because of its location, offerings, service and accessibility.” "The offerings in Al Asmakh Mall are wider than before with new stores such as Max, Shoexpress, Al Meera, Starbucks, Papa Johns, Florenza added. The existing stores such as Centrepoint, Home Centre, Emax, Fun Ville, Mc Donalds, Basking Robbins also have a new contemporary look. "The mall has used digital technology to modernise the feel. The exterior screen on the façade gained a lot of prominence and attention,” he added.

Place Vendome Mall

Upcoming Opening

Place Vendôme is no longer just French

Infinitely more than a fancy mall, the new Place Vendôme is an example of using fashion and luxury to spearhead possibly the biggest building project in the world. That's the brand new city of Lusail, being built some 20 kilometres north of capital city Doha, in time for the 2022 World Cup. Lusail will include marinas, residential areas, island resorts, commercial districts, luxury shopping and leisure facilities, golf courses and man-made islands in a city with a planned population of 260,000. Those who shop in Place Vendôme Paris – the deepest concentration of important high jewellery boutiques in the world – will not be unfamiliar with the labels selling in the Qatar mall. Prada, Louis Vuitton, Cartier and Christian Dior with double-decker stores of some 1,000 square-metres each will greet visitors. Place Vendôme will not open until September 2017, but its mammoth structure is already in place. From the top, 13th floor of a six-star hotel, one can see the ground works of the Norman Foster-designed Lusail Iconic Stadium, where the World Cup final will be held on December 18, 2022. Leveraging fashion, Place Vendôme partnered with glossy publisher Condé Nast for the 95th anniversary of French Vogue, presenting a giant model of the mall to fashion and luxury CEOs at the soirée in 51 Avenue d'Iéna in Paris. This March in Milan it sponsored a Vogue Italia issue shot by Steven Klein and edited by the late Franca Sozzani. Place Vendôme also sponsored the launch of Vogue Arabia (see related story), the latest link-up with fashion in Qatar's Museum of Islamic Art. Both structures are built overlooking the turquoise waters of the Gulf. "Christian Dior once said that elegance must be the right combination of distinction, naturalness care and complicity. And I cannot think of a more elegant venue to host the debut of Vogue. While Place Vendôme will be the new home of fashion and elegance in the Middle East. It's a groundbreaking example of the entrepreneurship, vision and energy of our nation's commitment to development," said Aisha Al Thani. This royal princess and executive, with an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University, brought many key brands to the mall. Guests can take trips on Riva speedboats on a canal from the sea that runs into the heart of Place Vendôme – a central open plaza with restaurants, cafés and laser light shows. Using new vapour water jet technology to create a permanently cool environment. Brands as diverse as Hermès, Tiffany, Fendi, Van Cleef & Arpels and Zadig & Voltaire will retail in the $1.5 billion project. Inside its 230,000 square-metres of leasable space, the mall includes an 18,000 square-metre family entertainment center, 18 restaurants, 19 cinema screens and a food court in a complex that uncannily mimics the famed Paris square. French architecture has great resonance in this region, where its symmetry appeals to a Middle Eastern sense of graphics. In America, malls are closing almost weekly, but in Qatar, there are plans to open six more. With temperatures often averaging 45 degrees on Friday evenings, most people don't go to a park, but to a mall. There may only be 300,000 Qataris (whose average monthly luxury spend is $5,000) , but a further 2.6 million ex-patriots live in this former British Protectorate. "The key factor is getting the entertainment right to increase dwell time. We hope at the weekend families will spend between five to six hours here," explained Irish-born project director Sean Kelly. Eventually, 5,000 staff will work in Place Vendôme, which is partly owned by the Qatari royal family. To say that malls are destinations in the Persian Gulf would be an understatement. Over 60 million people visited Dubai Mall last year – that's more tourists than visited Italy or Spain.

Doha unveils an unprecedented project for a shopping centre

In full development mode, the number of construction sites destined for tourist and commercial uses in Qatar’s capital is multiplying. Among its new projects, the Katara Plaza shopping centre in Doha stands out for its original concept. It is set to open in September 2016. The 410,000 ft² space will hold a Galeries Lafayette (150,000 ft² over 3 levels), some 30 stores covering 194,000 ft², a centre entirely dedicated to children (37,000 ft²) with a rather kitsch building in the shape of a present featuring brands, restaurants and special activities, an Evian spa centre (30,000 ft²) as well as 2,000 parking spots. The project was presented in Doha on 8 March to a panopoly of celebrities, such as Patrick Chalhoub, CEO of the Chalhoub group, synonymous with luxury in the Middle East, and the ambassador of France in Qatar, Eric Chevallier. Representatives from several brands were also present from Dolce & Gabbana to Cartier. This shopping centre, which will consist of two large wings of buildings along a shady avenue, in a Victorian architectural style with rows of columns, will feature an unprecedented open-air air conditioning system, allowing visitors to cross from one wing to the other and the courtyard without being subjected to the insufferable heat of the summer. It is the same system that will be used in Qatar’s stadiums, which will host the World Cup in 2022. Katara Plaza will be located in the centre of the Katara site, which spans across more than 21 million ft² of terrain between the West Bay business area and the new luxury residential district The Pearl in the north of Doha. The mall is indeed part of a vast real estate operation launched in 2010, with a huge « cultural village » erected over the past few years with mosques, an open-air theatre, an Italian-style opera, a dramatic arts theatre, a concert hall, etc. It will also have two new residential areas. This ambitious project by Katara is being promoted by the government of the Emirate of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, who is the main investor. 250 million dollars for its construction is being financed be by the government, while the Ali Bin Ali Group (ABA Group), the leader in distribution in Qatar with 80 % of the consumer goods market and shopping centre operations covered, is investing 200 million dollars. The latter has signed a 20-year contract. The Ali Bin Ali Group has been active in various sectors for 60 years, including distribution, notably with watch and jewellery labels like Cartier, Dunhill, Montblanc, Panerai and Van Cleef & Arpels, which it sells through chain stores and its own multibrand stores ABA Watches & Jewelry, while for fashion it is a distributor of names like Ermanno Scervino and Philipp Plein. Ali Bin Ali has some big ambitions with Katara Plaza, with the goal being to attract a clientele in the mid- to high-end range for accessible and upscale luxury. The centre will thus not have any supermarkets or food courts but instead real restaurants (7, including 4 in the Galeries Lafayette), an art gallery and an antiques shop. Nothing has yet been revealed in terms of the brands that will be installed in the centre, except that jeweller Graff has signed a contract for 900m². According to our sources, Saint Laurent is looking to acquire 5,400 ft². Everything will depend on the balance of the mid-range, affordable luxury and very high-end names. “We want to offer just the right blend. It won’t be the ABA mall. The number of stores will depend on the number of square feet requested by the brands, which require much bigger spaces now than in the past. We are betting on the major potential of the site, which already welcomes several millions of visitors,” stated the president of the group, Nabeel Ali Bin Ali.
